This guide compares the two plans side by side. We used only the official pricing and help pages from Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (ChatGPT). We did not run our own tests or benchmarks. The advice below is based on the features each company publishes.

Prices and features checked on 1 November 2026. AI plans change often, so check the official pages before you pay.

What each plan costs

Claude Pro

On the official Claude pricing page, Pro costs $20 a month if you pay monthly. If you pay for a full year, it costs $200 up front, which works out to about $17 a month. Anthropic says prices do not include tax.

ChatGPT Plus

The OpenAI Help Center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly. OpenAI also says it does not offer annual billing for Plus. You cannot pay for several months in advance.

What this means for you

If you pay month to month, the price is the same. If you are sure you will use the tool all year, Claude’s yearly plan saves you money. But it also locks you in for 12 months. For a freelancer with uneven income, a monthly plan can be the safer choice.

Not sure a $20 plan is worth it at all? Read our guide: Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month for freelancers?

Is paying worth it? What each option costs a monthUS$ per month, before tax
  • Free tiers only $0
  • Claude Pro, yearly plan ($200 ÷ 12) about $17
  • One $20 plan, monthly (Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus) $20
  • Both $20 plans $40

Most solo freelancers don't need both. Try the free tiers for a week, then pay for the one you opened most.

Based on official pricing pages checked 1 Nov 2026. Excludes tax.

Usage limits: how much can you actually do?

This is where many freelancers get stuck. Neither company gives a simple “X messages per day” number.

Claude Pro limits

Claude uses a rolling 5-hour window plus a weekly limit. Anthropic says Pro gives you at least 5 times more use per 5-hour session than the Free plan. How fast you hit the limit depends on:

  • the model you pick,
  • how long your chats are,
  • how large your files are.

Chats on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all share the same pool. When you hit the limit, you can wait for it to reset, move to a bigger plan, or turn on paid usage credits.

ChatGPT Plus limits

OpenAI says Plus has higher limits than Free and priority access when demand is high. It also says Plus may include message caps, and these can change with system conditions. The exact caps are not listed.

What this means for you

If you work in short bursts across the day, both plans should feel fine. If you do long, heavy sessions (for example, editing a full ebook in one sitting), you may hit limits on either plan. Claude’s 5-hour reset can pause you mid-task. Plan your big jobs with that in mind.

Features that matter to freelancers

Long documents and files

Claude’s pricing page lists a context window of up to 1M tokens, depending on the model. In simple terms, a bigger context window lets the AI “hold” more text at once.

ChatGPT’s pricing page lists different limits for Plus depending on the mode. For everyday chats, input is about 40 pages of text. For reasoning mode, it is about 320 pages of text.

If you often work with long contracts, reports or manuscripts, compare these numbers against your real files.

Projects for client work

Both plans include Projects. A project lets you keep chats and files for one client in one place. This is useful if you juggle several clients and don’t want to repeat your brief every time.

Research

Claude Pro includes Research. ChatGPT Plus includes Deep research. Both can search the web and pull together a longer answer. Always check the sources before you send anything to a client.

Images

ChatGPT Plus includes image creation, according to OpenAI’s pricing page. The Claude pricing page lists Claude Design and Slides, but it does not list image generation as a feature. If you need quick mockups or social images, ChatGPT has the clearer offer here.

Coding

Claude Pro includes Claude Code, which shares your plan’s usage limits. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex. Both are aimed at developers. If you code for clients, this may be the deciding feature, so try both on the free tiers first.

Office and browser tools

Claude Pro lists Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude for Outlook and Claude in Chrome. ChatGPT Plus lists extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets, plus a built-in browser. If your clients live in Google Sheets, that may tip the balance toward ChatGPT. If you live in Outlook, Claude has a listed add-in.

Admin and scheduled tasks

Both plans can schedule tasks. This can help with repeat chores, like a weekly client summary. For money tasks like invoices, a dedicated tool is usually better. See our list of the best AI invoicing tools for freelancers.

Privacy: your clients’ data

Freelancers often handle private client files. Both companies let you control training on your data:

  • Claude’s pricing page lists model training as “Opt-out” for Pro.
  • OpenAI says you can opt out of having your data used for training at any time.

Neither of these is a full privacy promise. Read each company’s privacy terms, and never paste data your client contract forbids you to share.

Which plan fits which freelancer?

Here is our recommendation by type of work. It is based on published features, not on our own tests.

Writers and copywriters

Lean: try both free tiers, then pick by feel. Both handle drafting and editing. Claude’s large context window helps with long manuscripts. ChatGPT adds image creation for blog visuals. Writing style is personal, so test each with a real brief before paying.

Designers

Lean: ChatGPT Plus. Image creation is listed on the Plus plan. Claude does not list it on its pricing page.

Developers

Lean: test both. Claude Pro includes Claude Code. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex. The right pick depends on your stack and how you work. Watch the usage limits, since coding sessions can be heavy.

Virtual assistants and admin freelancers

Lean: match your clients’ tools. Mostly Google Sheets? ChatGPT lists a Sheets extension. Mostly Outlook and Microsoft 365? Claude lists add-ins for both.

Researchers and consultants

Lean: either, with care. Both offer research tools. Claude’s larger context window may help with very long reports. Always verify facts and sources yourself.

Budget-first freelancers

Lean: Claude Pro (yearly) if you are sure; otherwise, stay monthly. The yearly Claude plan is the only option here that costs less than $20 a month. But only pay up front if you know you will use it all year.

Time saved: what a $20 plan has to save youMinutes per month for a $20 plan to pay for itself (20 ÷ hourly rate × 60)
  • At $20 an hour 60 min
  • At $40 an hour 30 min
  • At $60 an hour 20 min
  • At $100 an hour 12 min

At $40 an hour, half an hour saved a month covers a $20 plan. The real question is whether you'll actually save it.

Break-even math, not a promise of time saved.

FAQ

Is Claude Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?

Only if you pay yearly. Monthly, both cost $20 (US, before tax). Claude Pro’s yearly plan is $200 up front, about $17 a month. ChatGPT Plus has no yearly plan. (Checked on 1 November 2026.)

Which one has higher usage limits?

Neither company publishes a fixed message count, so a fair answer is hard. Claude Pro gives at least 5 times the Free plan’s use per 5-hour session, plus a weekly limit. ChatGPT Plus gives higher limits than Free, with possible caps at busy times.

Can I use them for client work?

Yes, both are built for work tasks. But check your client contracts first. Turn off model training if you handle sensitive files, and never share data you are not allowed to share.

Do I need both?

Most solo freelancers don’t. Paying for both is about $40 a month. Start with the free tiers, find the one you reach for most, and upgrade only that one.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Claude says you can cancel anytime and keep access until the end of your billing period. OpenAI lets you cancel Plus from your account settings. Refund rules differ by company and by country.

The bottom line

Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus cost the same per month. The real difference is in the details. ChatGPT Plus has image creation and Google Sheets support. Claude Pro has a yearly discount, a very large context window and Microsoft 365 add-ins.

Our advice is simple. Use the free version of both for one week on real client work. Then pay for the one you opened most. If you are still unsure whether any $20 plan pays off, start with our guide on whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it for freelancers.
