AI tools love to say “only $20 a month”. But freelancers rarely buy just one tool. A chat plan, a design plan and a note-taker can turn into $60 a month before you notice.

This guide builds three cheap AI stacks for a freelancer. One costs $0. One costs $20. One stays under a $30 monthly ceiling. We only used tools whose prices we could check on the vendor’s own pages.

Prices checked on 1 November 2026. All prices are regular US dollar prices, before tax. The monthly totals are simple addition of the listed prices. Local prices, VAT and sales tax can change what you pay.

We did not test these tools ourselves. Everything below is based on what each vendor lists.

The three stacks at a glance

Stack Paid parts Monthly cost (US$, before tax) Under $30?
1. Free-only None $0 Yes, $30 left
2. One paid plan ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, billed monthly $20 Yes, $10 left
3. Budget mix (yearly billing) Claude Pro yearly + Otter Pro yearly about $25.00 Yes, about $5 left
Warning: two chat plans ChatGPT Plus + Claude Pro, monthly $40 No, $10 over
A cheap stack with a $30 monthly ceilingWhat is left (or over) from a $30 monthly budget, US$
  • Free tiers only $30 left
  • Claude Pro, yearly plan about $13 left
  • One $20 plan, monthly $10 left
  • Two $20 plans $10 over

One paid plan plus free tools fits under $30. Two paid plans don't.

Based on official pricing pages checked 1 Nov 2026. Excludes tax.

The chart also shows Claude Pro on the yearly plan by itself: about $16.67 a month, so about $13 is left.

The free tools we used (and what the free plans list)

Every stack starts with free plans. Here is what each vendor lists for its free tier.

Tool Job What the free plan lists Cheapest paid option we checked Official page
ChatGPT Writing and chat Unlimited everyday text chats; limited uploads, image creation and deep research Plus: $20 a month, billed monthly openai.com/chatgpt/pricing
Claude Writing and chat Limited use every 5 hours and every week; web search; up to 5 projects Pro: $20 a month, or $200 a year claude.com/pricing
Gemini Chat and research Flash-Lite model, image creation, Deep Research, Canvas, 15 GB storage Google AI Plus: $4.99 a month one.google.com/about/google-ai-plans

Fathom Meeting notes Unlimited recordings and transcription; instant AI summaries Premium: $20 a month, or $16 a month yearly fathom.ai/pricing
Otter Meeting notes 300 transcription minutes a month; 3 file imports in total Pro: $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month yearly otter.ai/pricing
Zoho Invoice Invoices Free; up to 500 invoices a year, 2 users Free zoho.com/us/invoice/pricing

Stack 1: the free-only stack ($0 a month)

This stack costs nothing. It is a good place to start, even if you plan to pay later.

Job Tool Cost
Drafting emails, proposals, posts ChatGPT Free or Claude Free $0
Research with sources Perplexity Free or Gemini Free $0
Social posts, simple graphics Canva Free $0
Client call notes Fathom Free $0
Invoices Zoho Invoice $0
Total $0 + $0 + $0 + $0 + $0 = $0

What you get. ChatGPT’s pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats on Free. Claude Free lists web search, file creation and up to 5 projects. Fathom Free lists unlimited recordings and transcription. Zoho calls its invoicing app “forever-free”.

The catch. Free plans have limits. ChatGPT Free limits uploads, image creation and deep research. Claude Free has a usage limit that resets every 5 hours, plus a weekly limit. Zoho Invoice allows up to 500 invoices a year. Zoho also says it may delete the data of accounts inactive for more than 180 days. So log in now and then, or keep a backup.

Tip: use two free chat tools, not one. When you hit a limit on one, switch to the other. That alone can delay the day you need to pay.

Stack 2: one paid plan ($20 a month)

Most freelancers who pay for AI only need one paid plan: a chat assistant.

Job Tool Cost
Main assistant ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro (billed monthly) $20
Research Perplexity Free or Gemini Free $0
Design Canva Free $0
Meeting notes Fathom Free $0
Invoices Zoho Invoice $0
Total $20 + $0 + $0 + $0 + $0 = $20

That leaves $10 under a $30 ceiling.

ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro? Both cost $20 a month if you pay monthly. OpenAI’s Help Center says there is no yearly plan for Plus. Claude Pro has a yearly option. ChatGPT Plus lists image creation and Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions. Claude Pro lists Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 add-ins. We compare them in Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.

Stack 3: the budget mix (about $25 a month, yearly billing)

This stack adds a paid note-taker. It only fits under $30 because both plans are paid yearly. That means you pay up front.

Job Tool Monthly equivalent
Main assistant Claude Pro, yearly ($200 up front) $200 ÷ 12 = about $16.67
Meeting notes Otter Pro, yearly $8.33
Research Perplexity Free or Gemini Free $0
Design Canva Free $0
Invoices Zoho Invoice $0
Total $16.67 + $8.33 = about $25.00

That leaves about $5 under a $30 ceiling.

What Otter Pro adds. Otter’s pricing page lists 1,200 recording minutes a month on Pro, up to 90 minutes per meeting, and 10 file imports a month. The free Basic plan has 300 minutes a month.

Want Gemini too? Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month in the US. It lists 2x the usage of the free plan, 400 GB of storage and Gemini in Gmail. Add it to this stack and the sum is $16.67 + $8.33 + $4.99 = $29.99. That is right at the ceiling, with no room to spare.

The catch with yearly plans. Yearly billing is cheaper per month. But you pay $200 for Claude and about $100 for Otter on day one ($8.33 × 12 = $99.96, our sum). If your income is uneven, that can hurt. And if you stop using a tool after two months, the money is gone.

The stack that breaks the budget

Here is the trap: paying for two chat assistants.

ChatGPT Plus ($20) + Claude Pro monthly ($20) = $40 a month. That is $10 over a $30 ceiling, and $480 a year.

Many people pay for both “just in case”. Our advice is simple. Use both free plans for a week. Then pay for the one you opened most.

How to keep your stack cheap

  • Start free, upgrade one tool at a time. Only pay when a limit actually slows you down.
  • Write down the limits you hit. If you never hit one, you don’t need the paid plan.
  • Pay yearly only for tools you are sure about. Monthly costs more, but you can stop any time.
  • Watch for launch offers. Some pages show deals for first-time subscribers. We used regular prices. Offers end, and then the regular price applies.
  • Check the total with tax. Our numbers are before tax. In the EU and UK, VAT is added, so check the final price at checkout.
  • Cancel what you don’t use. Put a reminder in your calendar a few days before each renewal date.

FAQ

Can I really run a freelance business on free AI plans?

Many people can. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Canva, Fathom and Zoho Invoice all list free plans. The limits are the problem, not the price. If you hit limits every day, one paid plan usually fixes most of it.

What is the single best paid AI plan for a freelancer on a budget?

There is no single answer. For a general assistant, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month billed monthly (checked on 1 November 2026). Claude Pro also has a yearly plan at $200. Pick the one you already use most on the free plan.

Is yearly billing worth it?

It is cheaper per month. Claude Pro is about $16.67 a month on the yearly plan, against $20 monthly. Otter Pro is $8.33 a month yearly, against $16.99 monthly. But you pay for the whole year up front. Only pay yearly if you are sure you will keep the tool.

Are these prices final?

No. They are US prices before tax, checked on 1 November 2026. Local prices and taxes differ, and AI plans change often. Always check the official page before you pay.

Is this financial advice?

No. This guide only adds up listed prices. What makes sense for you depends on your work, income and country.

The bottom line

Different freelancers need different stacks:

  • Just starting, or money is tight: use Stack 1. It costs $0. Use two free chat tools and switch when you hit a limit.
  • You use AI every day for client work: use Stack 2. Pay for one chat plan ($20) and keep everything else free.
  • You have lots of client calls and steady income: use Stack 3. Claude Pro and Otter Pro on yearly billing come to about $25 a month.
  • Designers: start with Canva Free. Our image tools guide covers design options in more detail.
  • People drowning in admin: see our simple AI toolkit for one-person businesses and our guide to AI invoicing tools.

The cheapest AI stack is not the one with the lowest prices. It is the one where you pay only for what you really use.
